God is not a concept

How did we get to such a point that we forgot who God is. He isn’t a theory or a concept. I have been doing some great reading lately where some possibilities are posed.

The first possibility is that the human ritual of the exchange of gifts may influence a concept of God. Humans invented the exchange of gifts to show favor and sympathy. This exchange eases tension and stabilizes society in community. This creates a problem in viewing God by expecting an agenda from Him - the gift of eternal life can only be received if I do something first in the exchange.

Another possibility has to do with modern industrialization. When free market capitalism rolled into the world, we moved from being more self-sufficient to working jobs where wages and salary increases were important. If we apply that mindset to God and morality then we focus on what we have to do to get “properly compensated” in the afterlife.

In both of these mindsets, the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross would be pointless - because we would just have to do the right things and into heaven we would go. It’s a concept all right, but it isn’t God.

God is my deliverer!
