Quest for Knowledge

A quest for knowledge might sound harmless, but it was a legitimate threat to the faith of the believers at Colossae. False teachers promoted ideas that could potentially confuse someone or lead them astray. This problem wasn't unique to the Colossians. Paul warned Timothy of this threat in Ephesus when he said to "avoid the irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called 'knowledge,' for by professing it some have swerved from the faith" (1 Timothy 6:20b-21a).

Today, we face the same challenges of measuring cultural views and beliefs against our knowledge of God and drawing conclusions on what is true. With news, social media and entertainment always at our fingertips, there is an abundance of godless chatter to distract or confuse us. We must feed our faith daily with God's Word to keep our eyes on the Lord and our feet firmly planted in Truth. We have the Holy Spirit within us to guide us with spiritual wisdom and discernment. And just as Paul prayed for the Colossians to be filled with knowledge and spiritual wisdom, we can present that same request to the Lord on behalf of ourselves and our church families.
