Show up, Shut up, Look up
Prayer time with God is not some thing to check off your to do list. Prayer time with God should not be an egotistacle list of the things you want. Prayer time with God should not be utilitarian and going through the motions with a list of prayers for you or others. Prayer time with God is about showing up in his presence purposefully, quietly listening to what he has to say to you, and looking up to the one who has the answers.
“But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”
2 Corinthians 3:16-18 NIV
Don’t talk to God like you are leaving a voicemail message. It is a two way conversation. We’re so quick to speak to God and share our requests that we can so easily forget that he might want to say something to us.
God does talk back. Through his word, other times a gentle whisper. The ‘gentle whisper’ of God sometimes comes as an idea or a mental impression during a time of quiet prayer, other times through words spoken by someone else. Not an audible booming voice or a burning bush, just a gentle whisper that I need to shut up to hear.
Look up, acknowledging that God has the answers you seek. Not google, not typically the advice from a non-believer, and you won’t get answers if you don’t spend time seeking Him.
