The Anchor
An anchor is a device, normally made of metal, used to secure a vessel to the bed of a body of water to prevent the craft from drifting due to wind or current. The word derives from Latinancora, which itself comes from the Greekἄγκυρα (ankȳra).
To prevent drifting…
“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain,”
Hebrews 6:19 NIV
The hope is not in OUR plan, but clarity and trust in HIS plan. When we lean in and trust in our Savior, we are trusting him to prevent us from drifting. Drifting away from his promises, drifting away from our calling, and drifting away to living our best life in Jesus Christ.
“Who is like you, Lord God Almighty? You, Lord, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you. You rule over the surging sea; when its waves mount up, you still them.”
Psalms 89:8-9 NIV
The Lord is there so that we are not afraid of any storm we face. Sometimes it dissipates quickly like when Jesus told the waves to stop (Mark 4:35-41). And sometimes, like Paul’s sail to Rome, it is a treacherous journey before the sandy beaches appear (Acts 27). In both stories when trust was put back in God and not our own, human, worldly abilities and understanding, then God was able to move and rebuke the storm.
Storms will come, Jesus made it clear that because of him we would face difficulty; however, when He is the anchor and we do not go adrift… then nothing can impede us from all of the gifts of the kingdom and heaven above.
